Conductor Hirvo Surva named 'Musician of the Year'
The music editors of ERR nominated Surva as the Estonian musician of the year.
Hirvo Surva was the artistic director of the 26th Estonian Song Celebration in 2014. Apart from taking responsibility for this huge event, the 51-year-old choirmaster has for many years helped to develop the choir music culture in Estonia.
Surva studied choir conducting at the Georg Ots Tallinn Music School and at the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre. He is the Chief Chorus Master of the Estonian National Opera Chorus, Chief Conductor of the Estonian National Opera Boys’ Choir, the Estonian United Boys’ Choir “Kalev” and the Revalia Male Chamber Choir. Since 1991, he has been actively participating as a conductor in the Estonian Song Festivals, and was the Artistic Director of the 8th (1997) and 9th (2002) Youth Song Celebration.
Surva's choirs have also successfully participated in many international competitions and have won several prestigious awards.
A concert celebrating the most outstanding Estonian musicians in 2014 will take place in January 11, broadcasted also by ERR's Vikerraadio, Klassikaraadio, and ETV.
The “Musician of the Year” title has been given out for 32 years. Previous nominents include Paavo Järvi (2012), Ivo Linna (2009), Anu Tali (2006), Kalle Randalu (1982), Alo Mattiisen (1988), Valter Ojakäär (1993), Erkki-Sven Tüür (1996), Tõnu Kaljuste (1998), Rein Rannap (2002).
