City Museum Brings Back Golden Sixties
The Tallinn City Museum is taking its visitors back to the 1960s with an exhibition of consumer goods and numerous photographs depicting everyday life during that phase of the Soviet period.
“What is interesting is that a lot of items from the era were either discarded or recycled so, for example, finding furniture was quite challenging,” said the exhibition's curator Aino Lepp, noting that one of the most difficult items to dig up was a kidney-shaped table.
After some effort, however, the museum managed to assemble an authentic 1960s living room. In addition, items such as the ever-popular waffle cookers and Old Thomas lamps are on display. Visitors are also treated to the melodies of the era.
According to Lepp, the youth of today is not really familiar of how people lived 50 years ago. “I fear that young people view the Soviet era as an entirely gloomy period, yet the 1960s were different,” she said.
The exhibition, titled "Kuldsed kuuekümnendad" (Golden Sixties), will be open through the end of October.
