Commissioner Proposes Expanded Role as Public Defender
New Commissioner for Gender Equality Mari-Liis Sepper says the responsibilities of her position could include providing support and assistance in court for people who find they were the victim of discrimination.
Speaking on the ETV program Kahekõne, Sepper said that the commissioner's function is to provide an opinion to citizens who find they were discriminated against.
"Such an opinion cannot be accompanied by a precept or fine, but people become more confident about possibly mounting an appeal or challenge. [...] One option might be giving the commissioner the means and competence to accompany the individual through the courts," explained Sepper.
