A. Le Coq bought a 49 percent stake in Karme AS, the parent company of the Karksi brewery.

With the purchase, A. Le Coq will have access to equipment and facilities for producing apple wine, which is used to make popular carbonated libations.

A. Le Coq director Tarmo Noop said exports for wine-based drinks have increased significantly in recent years, creating a higher demand for apple wine. "We see a future in cider production,” said Noop.

The Karksi brewery will continue to be led by Ivo Kikas, who has held the position for nine years.

Noop said the deal would not result in significant changes for the Karksi brewery's beer operations. "We will support the brewery with our experience and knowledge with production, marketing and sales," said Noop.

The price of the acquisition was not made public.
