Grid Operator Begins Building Estlink 2
Construction began for the 320-million-euro underwater electrical cable Estlink 2, which will connect Estonia's power grid to Finland.
Work began Thursday in the rural municipality of Aseri, where the cable will enter the sea after traveling 12 kilometers underground from a transmission station in the town of Püssi. After continuing under water for 145 kilometers, the cable will terminate in the town of Anttila on the Finnish side.
The 650-megawatt Estlink 2 will become operational in 2014, tripling the electrical supply shared between the Baltic and Nordic markets.
With 100 million euros in EU support, the remainder of the cost will be split by Estonian and Finnish taxpayers.
Estlink 1 became fully operational in 2007.
