A delegation from the US state of Utah has arrived for a weeklong visit to take a look at the Estonian technology that will be used to retort and refine American oil shale.

Eesti Energia's project in Uintah County centers on an estimated 3.1 billion tons of the mineral, which could yield 2.1 billion barrels of oil.

The delegation that arrived on June 28 includes Utah senator Kevin Van Tassell, Uintah County officials Mike McKee, Mark Raymond and Tammie Lucero.

Eesti Energia's plans include developing an operation capable of producing up to 50,000 barrels per day using the Enefit technology based on the Galoter process developed in Estonia.

The geological site investigations have been completed with additional studies in the works. An environmental impact assessment is also underway.

The project could take four to six years to reach the beginning of construction, then another three to four years for it to be completed.

Eesti Energia has a similar project in Jordan where it is the supplier and developer of the Enefit technology.
