Retailer: Christmas Shoppers More Miserly Than in 2008
Though Estonian retailers generally prospered this Christmas sales period, the average value of their purchases on a per-day basis was less than it was three years ago, according to the director of the Prisma Peremarket chain.
“It's clear that the feeling of consumer confidence is not at the same level it was in 2008,” Reigo Rahumäe told Äripäev, commenting that he believes that the cautious spending will continue into the new year.
Rahumäe pointed out, however, that Prisma's own overall intake was still growing.
“The rise in Prisma's Christmas sales volume can be explained by the rise in our market share. The number of our clients has increased steadily over the past year, and this trend is continuing,” he said.
He noted that rising prices had also played a role in increased sales figures.
