The managing director of Swedbank Estonia, Priit Perens, was elected chairman of the Banking Association.

Perens is replacing SEB Estonia head Riho Unt, who cited preparing the nation for the currency changeover as the organization's most important challenge under his two-year term of leadership.

“An ongoing priority is to continue developing the mature state of the banking market,” said Unt.

According to Perens, the next year will be dedicated to facilitating good banking practices such as responsible lending as well as drawing conclusions from the recent economic crisis. Representing the interests of banks in the drafting of laws will also continue to be a key task, said Perens.

The Estonian Banking Association was founded in 1992 by 21 commercial banks.
