Cabinet could turn Linnahall into convention center
According to the coalition agreement, the state is aiming to build a new convention center in Tallinn, and the giant abandoned Linnahall structure could be the location.
Talks are already underway between the government, the city, which own the property, and Enterprise Estonia.
Ott Sarapuu, who heads Enterprise Estonia's tourism department, said nothing is currently certain and they are looking at ten sites. “Now that the convention center is written into the coalition agreement the topic is again on the agenda and demands quick progress.”
Sarapuu said the center would not be ready in the next five years in any case.
Deputy Mayor Taavi Aas said the idea would be ideal for Linnahall, but the city is not willing to put its own money into the project.
Tallinn has been attempting to offload the giant structure for years. It was last used for a concert in 2009 and has been falling apart ever since.
