Interest Towards Small Banknotes in ATMs Modest
Although a year ago many demanded that five-euro banknotes would be available for withdrawal in ATMs, the interest towards them has been low since the euro was adopted at the beginning of 2011.
The state initially proposed to keep the 10-euro banknote the smallest - an idea which drew strong opposition from the public, wrote Postimees.
Silver Vohu, head of communications at SEB, said that 10-, 20- and 30-euro withdrawals have so far been most popular, making up 40 percent of all transactions.
The five-euro bills, however, make up 8 percent of the transactions, said Vohu. "It is rather unusual that larger sums are taken out in small banknotes," he added.
According to Mart Siilivask, spokesperson for Swedbank, the number of cash withdrawals from ATMs has dropped by 6 percent this year compared to 2010 and the overall sum has decreased by 2 percent.
In January 2011, Estonia became the 17th country to join the Eurozone.
