Strong Alcohol Must Pass 'Strength Test' Under New Finnish Customs Rule
A new solution kicks in tomorow to address concerns that some Finnish ferry passengers are bringing too much lower-cost alcohol back from Estonia.
Starting Friday, foot passengers disembarking in Helsinki can only bring across as much alcohol as they can carry. In the past, some of the quantities have been high enough to lead customs to suspect they are for resale, Helsingin Sanomat reported.
But the new law doesn't affect vehicles.
Customs officials say that disabled people will be allowed quantities equivalent to what a completely able-bodied person would be able to carry.
A meeting at Finnish customs will decide whether there will be additional rules, such as whether beverages can be carried in the holds of tour operator buses.
The only ferry company that has established limits on alcohol is Silja Line - 70 liters per passenger.
