Sunday alcohol ban in Tallinn delayed
A ban on alcohol sales on Sundays in Tallinn has been postponed after two alcohol retail chains took the city to court. The ban was due to come into effect on March 8.
Deputy Mayor Merike Martinson said the fact that the stores sued the city means that only they will have the right to sell alcohol this Sunday, a situation which would give them an unfair advantage.
Both of the companies, Aldar Eesti, owners of the Superalko chain, and Naltu OÜ of Araxes, have asked the courts for legal protection from the ban.
Tallinn has protested the legal protection, but as the ban was due to come into effect in a few days, the city decided to postpone it.
Retailers said the ban could have the reverse effect as Sunday sales volumes are half compared to Friday and Saturday, and could lead to people hoarding alcohol at home. The ban could also lead to many driving outside of Tallinn's borders to buy alcohol.
