Grain Harvest Up 14%
A total of 771,900 tons of grain was harvested last year, a 14 percent increase compared to 2010, according to preliminary data from Statistics Estonia.
In 2011, yields of wheat, barley and rye increased, standing at 360,400 tons, 294,500 tons and 30,900 tons, respectively.
The total area sown for cereals grew by 8 percent last year to reach 297,200 hectares. The total area of wheat fields hit its 30-year peak at 128,500 hectares; rye fields exceeded 13,300 hectares and barley fields made the largest year-on-year growth, increasing by 13 percent to 118,100 hecatares.
In 2011, the production of legumes stood at 15,500 tons.Turnip rape yield reached 143,600 tons, up by 10 percent compared to 2010. The potato harvest, however, decreased by 8 percent to 150,900 tons.
In fall of last year, 52,700 hectares of winter wheat, 12,200 hectares of rye and 4,700 hectares of triticale were sown.
