Kazakhstan bans Estonian, Latvian fish products
Following in the footsteps of Russia, Kazakhstan has now also banned imports of Estonian and Russian fish products.
The decision was based on tests by Rosselhoznadzor, the Russian veterinary authority.
Kazakhstan authorities said Estonian and Latvian fish products do not meet sanitary requirements of the Eurasian Union, a counterweight to the European Union. The Eurasian Union has five members – Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia and Tajikistan.
No other details have been released so far.
Russia began to ban Estonian fish products at the end of 2013, citing failed inspections that year. Estonian fish products are traditionally popular in Russian markets and Russia has a heavy reliance on EU producers for food.
