Tartu's Open University for Seniors Expands to Tallinn
The University of Tartu is expanding its seniors university program (Väärikate ülikool), geared to open-minded people 60 and up who are interested in exploring themes on a deeper level than is possible in the mass media.
The program will open in Tallinn today with introductory remarks by officials followed by a lecture on viruses, viral infections and means of combating them, delivered by academician Mart Ustav. The next lecture is on June 9, and the series will then return for the autumn semester.
A college degree is not a requirement for the program, which is taught by University of Tartu alumni and faculty and is based on lifelong learning principles so as to flexibly respond to society's needs and changes.
The project was launched successfully at the university's Pärnu college in early 2010 and the first class was also admitted in Tartu for the autumn semester. The program was chosen as one of the Outstanding Projects 2010 by the city of Tartu.
