13,900 Kids Crunch Numbers in Global Math Competition
Around 13,900 children from 369 grade schools around Estonia are participating in the worldwide Mathematical Kangaroo competition today, March 16.
All together the competition will be held in 54 countries this year, with over 6 million students solving similar math problems.
The contest is not intended to compare results of students in different countries but instead to popularize mathematics and provide students with exciting tasks that require creativity and wit, said Raili Vilt, head organizer of the Estonian event.
The competition is carried out as a 75-minute, multiple choice test that consists of 30 questions, with participants divided into four different age groups. Results will be announced in late April, said Vilt.
Soon after it was launched in Australia in 1991, the competition was duplicated in France, from where in quickly spread to other countries.
