Valga Student Places Second in Russian-Language Olympiad
A ninth-grader from southern Estonia's town of Valga came in second place at the 10th international Russian language olympiad for schoolchildren in Moscow.
Maksim Shevtshenko, who attends a Russian school in Valga, as well as nearly 20,000 other contestants, spent two years preparing for the olympiad for speakers of Russian as first language, which concluded on Tuesday. One competitor was chosen to represent each participating country at the eight and ninth-grade level in the final four-hour tournament in Moscow, a Valga municipality press release said.
"Two years of rigorous work paid off," said Shevtshenko's teacher, Anna Gutovskaja.
Other participating countries included Lithuania, Latvia, Armenia and Belarus.
