Tartu University Rector Not Considering Second Term
The University of Tartu announced on March 19 that its rector, Alar Karis, has decided not to submit his candidacy for a second five-year term.
According to Karis, the university needs new people, new leaders and fresh ideas so that the alma mater can develop in the best possible way.
"By giving up my candidacy, I will give others the opportunity to realize their vision of the university's future," said Karis, adding that he hoped his announcement would nudge more potential candidates toward running for the position.
Last week, the university's Council of the Faculty of Medicine presented Karis as their rector candidate for the coming term, which begins July 1. His candidacy was supported by 29 council members and opposed by one.
The deadline for declaring candidacy is May 7, with the elections taking place on the last day of that month.
