Tartu University Presents Record Number of PhD Diplomas
The University of Tartu is presenting a record 162 doctoral diplomas today at a ceremony celebrating the 92nd anniversary of the institution’s switch to Estonian-language instruction.
According to Alar Karis, university's rector, increasing the number of PhDs has been an long-term goal for the school.
"I am especially pleased by the fact that, in addition to those in academic circles, both the public and entrepreneurs are taking more interest in the work of young scientists," Karis said.
In addition, the university is handing out five honorary doctorates. Among the recipients are Scott F. Gilbert, a US biologist and professor in Swarthmore College and University of Helsinki, and Krister Höckstedt, a renowned medical scientist and liver surgeon in Finland.
The recipient of the university's annual award for the most significant contribution to national identity will also be named today.
