Q2 Figures In: Renewable Slice of Energy Pie Continues Increasing
In the second quarter, renewable energy made up 13.5 percent of total power consumption in Estonia, compared to 12.2 percent a year ago.
As to the production side of the ledger, renewable energy made up 11 percent of the total energy generated.
A total of 281 GWh of renewable energy was produced in the second quarter - up 10% from 2013.
More than half of that amount - 160 GWh - was from biomass, biogas and waste, which was a 15 percentage point increase, said Elering, the country's transmission system operator.
Subsidies for this category of energy generation amounted to 7.3 million euros. Last year's comparable figure was 7.0 million euros. Biodegradable waste became eligible for subsidies in Q3 2013.
Wind energy made up 40 percent of the total amount of renewable energy produced in the second quarter, rising by 5 percent to 113 GWh, bolstered by the completion of new wind farms in northwestern Estonia. Wind energy subsidies totaled 5.2 million euros, a 46 percent increase compared to Q2 2013.
Microproducers continue to join the grid in high numbers, but the total subsidies paid for solar energy is relatively low compared to other categories- 6,700 euros for 124.1 MWh fed into the grid. That's much more than the 1,400 in the second quarter of last year. A total of 111 solar panel operators compared to 17 last year received support.
