This Week's Weather: Snow and Sleet
As below-freezing temperatures become more the norm this week, weather systems should bring in increasing amounts of sleet, with snow likely to make a comeback.
Monday's damp fog and light precipitation should continue into early Tuesday morning, when a low pressure front moving to cover the country will bring showers to some areas. In southwestern Estonia, that will likely mean rain and sleet, while in southern Estonia it will translate to snow, according to the latest from the Meteorology and Hydrology Institute. The wetness will intensify toward Tuesday evening as winds begin to gust up above 50 kilometers her hour on the islands. Daytime temperatures on the mainland will be -1 to +1 C and on the islands 0 to +3 C.
Snow and sleet should spread to central areas of the country between Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, then become more common in the rest of Estonia as the day wears on. Thermometer readings on Wednesday should be in the -3 to 0 range.
Another low-pressure trough will bring warmer, wetter air on Thursday, along with stronger winds and the occasional rain and sleet. Temperatures are expected to be in -4 to 0 C range on the mainland, reaching +1 on the islands.
A storm scheduled for Friday is likely to bring the most intense rain, snow and sleet with even a chance of a blizzard. Thermometers will show a chilly -6 to 0, becoming considerably warmer by evening.
