Eston Kohver interrogated today at Lefortovo prison
Russian Federation investigators will interrogate the abducted Estonian internal secret service agent Eston Kohver at Moscow's Lefortovo prison today.
Kohver's lawyer Evgeni Aksjonov told ERR that he will be at present when the agent is questioned.
The court proceedings in Kohver's case are supposed to start in April, but the exact date has not been confirmed yet. According to Aksojonov, he will seek the release of Kohver, but all depends of the court and prosecution.
According to the Estonian Internal Security Service, Kohver was abducted at gunpoint near Luhamaa border checkpoint on September 5, 2014, and taken to Russia. The kidnapping was preceded by jamming of communications and use of a smoke grenade; the interference was said to originate from the Russia side. Russia is holding him on spying charges.
Many countries, led by the United States, the United Kingdom, and Germany, have previously issued a statement, calling for the release of Kohver.
Kohver is held at Lefortovo, a notorious prison that during the Stalin’s 'Great Purge' was used by NKVD for interrogations with torture. The detainment of political prisoners continued under KGB and in 2005 it was handed to secret police FSB – the Russian successor of KGB.
Alexander Litvinenko, a former officer of the FSB, who was assassinated in London in 2006, recalled his confinement at the prison as "spiritually crushing."
"Lefortovo crushes you spiritually. There is some negative energy coming from those walls. They say that birds avoid flying over it. Perhaps it’s the legacy of the old days when Lefortovo was a place of mass executions and torture," Litvinenko said to Alan Cowell, the author of The Terminal Spy.
