Expert: Eston Kohver could be freed after Estonia-Russia border treaty ratification
According to Jaan Ginter, the head of Faculty of Law at the University of Tartu, the abducted Estonian internal secret service agent Eston Kohver could be released after Russian Duma has ratified the border treaty between Estonia and Russia.
“The fact that the ratification process has proceeded to the Russian State Duma, is a positive sign and indicates that the bilateral relations between Estonia and Russia may improve, after the recent tensions,“ Ginter said to Õhtuleht.
Ginter said that it may also mean that Eston Kohver will be finally released, after seven months in Russian captivity.
Kohver, Estonian authorities say, was in the line of duty, collecting information on cross-border corruption in the vicinity of the Estonian-Russian border, when he was abducted on September 5 last year. Estonia has always insisted that Kohver's abduction violates international law. Russia is holding him on spying charges.
