NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said on Monday that NATO will formally agree this week to deploy four international battalions to Poland and the three Baltic States to boost defenses against Russia.

Stoltenberg told a news conference that NATO defense ministers will formally approve the deployment plan drafted by NATO military planners at a meeting beginning on Tuesday in Brussels.

Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland will each be reinforced by a “robust multinational battalion,” said the NATO chief. According to earlier reports from NATO officials, the battalions will be deployed on a rotational basis.

NATO defense ministers are scheduled to meet in Brussels on Tuesday and Wednesday this week. The NATO summit in Warsaw on July 8-9 is expected to put the final seal of approval on measures dedicated to reinforcing the alliance’s eastern flank.
