The only Estonian to compete on the second full day of competition at the 2016 Rio Olympics was swimmer Maria Romanjuk, who, while placing 30th overall in her event, won her heat in the 100-meter breaststroke with a time of 1:09:49, a repeat of the Estonian record she herself had set just one year prior.

Before the race, 19-year-old Romanjuk, for whom the first heat was her Olympic debut, had commented that if things went well, she hoped to set a new Estonian record. While that ended up not being the case, she tied her own record as set at the World Championships in Kazan, Russia last August.

With her time of 1:09:49, Romanjuk beat out second place Malaysian Jinq-En Phee by 0.73 and third place Kyrgyzstani Dariia Talanova by 1.45 seconds.

A total of 44 women competed in the 100-meter breaststroke, in which the Estonian swimmer placed 30th overall.
