Tsahkna: Ministerial appointments are significant decisions
Pro Patria and Res Publica Union (IRL) chairman and the new coalition government’s candidate for Minister of Defence Margus Tsahkna found that ministers should be considered at length for their positions, as these are such significant decisions.
Speaking in ETV’s "Aktuaalne kaamera" studio on Monday evening, Tsahkna explained that the appointment of ministers is an important decision, which is why IRL took its time with the party’s five appointments so as not to act rashly.
"This is a significant decision and our desire was to thoroughly consider not just who will be representing the party in the government but also what we will do there and how we will conduct our work," Tsahkna said, explaining why IRL was the last of the three coalition partners to announce their ministerial candidates.
The chairman of the IRL explained that as they were a member of the previous coalition government as well, their role was to be responsible for ensuring that the laws involving the state budget are changed quickly and that work would continue on defense-related topics.
Marko Mihkelson, one name that figured prominently in speculations regarding the new coalition, did not end up a ministerial candidate after all.
"There are moments in which a party chairman doesn’t have much to choose," Tsahnka said, adding that as party chairman he himself didn’t have the option to not be a part of the new government.
He noted that while normally the choosing of ministers involves internal nominations followed by separate votes on each candidate, this time things were discussed, there was no voting and the decisions reached were consensual.
While three of five IRL’s ministerial appointments will be going to people from the former Res Publica camp, the party as a whole has been referring to itself as the Fatherland Party for some time already.
Tsahnka found, however, that the party’s content was more important than its name, and the new coalition agreement was in his opinion was borne of a strong patriotic ideology.
"Read the coalition agreement," he said, "It is a very patriotic document."
