The chairmen of the two junior coalition members, the Social Democrats and IRL, expressed their worry on Friday that the result of the British referendum would work in favor of populists everywhere in the EU.

Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDE), Jevgeni Ossinovski, said on Friday that the decision of UK voters to leave the European Union injured both the UK and the rest of Europe and would pave the way for the spread of populism.

“David Cameron played Russian roulette and shot his brains out. Unfortunately for us, the 500 million citizens of the European Union, the bullet also wounded the most successful European peace project in history. No more ever closer union for anybody,” Ossinovski said on social media.

“Populist politicians are now asking for Dave's revolver in every other EU country. Unfortunately, there will be other prime ministers who instead of leading their people through rough waters will pander to suicidal populism,” Ossinovski said.

“Undoubtedly, David Cameron has secured a mention in the history books. He will be bitterly remembered next time Europeans, once again, take up arms against each other,” he added.

Tsahkna: Populists will gain as a result of British referendum

Populist political forces in Europe would gain from the outcome of the British referendum, Margus Tsahkna, chairman of the Pro Patria and Res Publica Union (IRL), said.

“Putin is drinking Champagne. Europe can be broken by no one else but by Europe itself. You don't need tanks for it. The Brits made a start. I predict that populists in other countries are gaining strength, France may be next. And for us this is a very dangerous trend, as Eastern winds are getting stronger,” Tsahkna said on social media on Friday.
