President Toomas Hendrik Ilves embarks on a week-long working visit to the US on Friday, which will take him from the nation’s capital to California on its West Coast before returning east again. Stops on this visit will include Georgetown University, Stanford University and the University of Pennsylvania.

Together with his wife Ieva Ilves, the president will visit Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., where he has been invited to speak to the graduates of its School of Foreign Service, which include future foreign service officers from a number of different countries, about diplomacy in a changed world and the challenges of this world’s democratic community.

Ilves has also been invited to San Francisco to speak to a group of entrepreneurs, risk investors and innovators, after which he will travel to Stanford, Calif., where the Estonian head of state was invited by former US Ambassador to Russia Professor Michael McFaul to give a guest lecture at Stanford University on European security policy and meet with a number of distinguished members of faculty and researchers.

President Ilves will also give the keynote address, “International Order Under Strain: Implications for the Baltic Sea Region,” at the University of Pennsylvania’s Association for the Advancement of Baltic Studies Conference on May 26.

The Estonian head of state is scheduled to return to Estonia on May 27.
