Legal Affairs Committee certain Savisaar materials leak not among authorities
Chairman of the Riigikogu’s Legal Affairs Committee, Jaanus Karilaid (Center), said after a commission meeting on Monday that they were now certain that the documents couldn’t have been leaked by someone within the state authorities.
Karilaid told ERR that representatives of the authorities had made it sufficiently clear that the leak couldn’t have been among them. The meeting was attended by Prosecutor General Lavly Perling as well as Minister of Justice Urmas Reinsalu (IRL) and Minister of the Interior Andres Anvelt (SDE).
“The Legal Affairs Committee today has reason to think that the leaks didn’t come from there,” Karilaid said. “We’re feeling confident that the state institutions wouldn’t manipulate the public in this manner.”
Who exactly from among the accused and their defense had leaked the materials wasn’t clear, he added.
Prosecutor General Lavly Perling confirmed the same to ERR’s radio news on Monday, saying that they had analyzed log files, checked who had accessed the materials, and couldn’t say that someone had done this who wasn’t directly involved.
As a consequence of the leak, Minister of Justice Urmas Reinsalu will introduce proposals to improve the situation. Under consideration are harsher punishments for those who leak sensitive data as well as the more detailed tracking of those who have access.
