Estonian foreign minister speaks to Jagland about situation in Turkey (2)
Estonian Minister of Foreign Affairs Marina Kaljurand spoke with Secretary General of the Council of Europe Thorbjørn Jagland on the phone on Monday afternoon, discussing the current situation in Turkey as well as Jagland's upcoming visit there.
"A coup attempt resulting in a large number of victims deserves only condemnation," said Kaljurand. "I hope that Turkey is able to restore constitutional order quickly and peacefully."
Kaljurand stressed that investigation and administration of justice in Turkey have to take place in accordance with rules of law.
According to Kaljurand, Jagland's visit to Turkey this week is a right and needed step. "It is important to retain a direct dialogue with Turkey on the highest level as well as to get accurate information regarding the measures the country is planning to implement in the state of emergency," she said.
They agreed on Jagland relaying the results of his visit to Kaljurand by phone after the visit and to representatives of the Council of Europe in the course of an informal meeting in Strasbourg on August 5.
Jagland is to scheduled to visit Turkey on August 3-4, during which he will meet with Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım, Minister of Foreign Affairs Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, Minister of Justice Bekir Bozdağ as well as leaders of the country's opposition parties.
