Russian submarine signal buoy found on Saaremaa island
One of the Rescue Board’s mine clearance teams removed a Russian submarine signal buoy from the shore of Mustjala parish in Saare County.
Head of Rescue Board’s West Estonian mine clearance group Janek Sõnum told local daily Saarte Hääl that the buoy was a Russian KSP signal unit designed to fire flares once it reaches the surface.
Since 2005 the group has moved out 16 times for similar incidences. The same signal units have been found along the coast of Sweden as well.
Where exactly the buoys are coming from the Rescue Board couldn’t say. The latest find seemed to be “pretty fresh”, so there was the question when exactly a Russian submarine had been close to the Estonian coast, and why, Oliver Liidemann, who had called the Police and Rescue Board, said.
Another signal buoy of the type had been found on the small island of Harilaid in September 2014.
