Palling presents Estonian e-solutions in Greece, meets with counterpart
At a presentation of Estonia’s e-solutions in Athens, chairman of the Riigikogu’s European Union Affairs Committee Kalle Palling (Reform) said that the European Union could make use of Estonia’s e-government expertise.
In his report presented at the TEDx Academy conference in the Greek capital on Saturday, Palling focused on the digital solutions currently used in Estonia, namely the establishment of a business, filing an income tax return, and the e-health and e-election systems.
Palling also introduced the concept of Estonia’s e-residency and the various opportunities offered by the X-Road, Estonia’s decentralized approach to connecting the private and government levels and making it all accessible to different users.
During his visit Palling also met with the chairman of the group for parliamentary ties with Estonia in the Greek parliament and attended a meeting of the Greek parliament’s EU affairs committee. A bilateral meeting then took place with the chairman of the EU affairs committee, Anastasios Kourakis, with whom the migration pressure on Greece was discussed.
Together with an official of the Estonian Police and Border Guard Board working in Greece, Palling explained to the Greek side the system of relocation of asylum seekers to Estonia.
“Greece highly appreciates our contribution, although in absolute terms we are speaking of small numbers as far as Estonia is concerned,” Palling said. “But behind every number there is a person, and the possibility to start a new life in Estonia.”
Palling said the people relocated to Estonia from Greece had themselves wanted to come to here, and pointed out that the fact that none of them had left Estonia so far was proof of the good work of Estonian officials.
Palling also made a presentation on e-governance in a think-tank bringing together organizations dealing with open technology in Greece.
