Elron to buy three express trains for Tallinn-Tartu route
Passenger train operator Elron is planning to buy three additional trains. To this end, the company has revived plans to get three express trains for its Tallinn-Tartu route. The expected size of the investment is close to €30m.
Press spokesman of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Communications, Mihkel Loide, said to daily Postimees that the plan was to buy three express trains. The trains would offer additional services to passengers, such as offering food and drink. They would also be more comfortable than the current rolling stock.
Elron’s sales and development manager, Ronnie Kongo, said that a meeting to discuss additional trains with the government had not taken place due to the change in power. Kongo expects the meeting to take place some time in the coming few weeks.
The supervisory board of Elron discussed the issue on Nov. 9 and came to the conclusion that additional rolling stock was needed, assuming that the conditions for it were given and solutions to other more pressing issues could be found.
According to Kongo, getting the new trains ordered and operational will take at least two years.
