Member of the European Parliament Kaja Kallas, who belongs to the Reform Party, said on Tuesday that she didn't understand the behavior of other government parties and that in her opinion, Taavi Rõivas was correct not to resign.

“It is quite hard to understand why our coalition partners are acting this way, but we will find out in the next few days,” was Kallas’ comment to ERR regarding the government crisis.

According to Kallas, it is too early to say whether Taavi Rõivas should take responsibility for the crisis and also resign from the position of Reform Party chairman. “Let’s see how all this pans out, and then look ahead. In my opinion, it is definitely not the right moment to start looking for culprits within our own party.”

When asked if a coalition between the Reform and Center parties would be plausible, Kallas answered that it would not be dignified to participate in an auction and try to outbid the offer that Center already had from the Social Democrats and IRL.

“I sincerely believe that all parties want the best for Estonia, but different parties simply disagree on what that is. But I believe that the common goal is for Estonia to do as well as possible,” added Kallas.

ERR also asked Kallas to comment on Rõivas’ decision to not step down, but go ahead with the no-confidence vote in the parliament. “IRL and Social Democrats initiated the break-up. Were Taavi Rõivas to resign, he would be the one to break up the government. Let it be what it really is. It is up to them to explain the reasons. In that sense, Taavi Rõivas did the right thing,” said Kallas.

Different voices inside the Reform Party have hinted that Marina Kaljurand’s supporters within the party was behind Rõivas’ takedown. “Now they [Kaljurand’s supporters] are pretending to be the ones who are suffering, but it’s hard to feel sorry for them. I’m sorry for the country, of course,” longtime Reform Party member Meelis Atonen commented on Facebook on Monday.
