Pevkur: Theresa May to make good prime minister for UK, favorable for Estonia
According to Estonian Minister of the Interior Hanno Pevkur, the UK is getting a good prime minister in Theresa May, who values agreements and views Estonia positively as well.
Pevkur has worked with Theresa May in the EU's Justice and Home Affairs Council for two and a half years.
"My experiences with her have been very positive and I believe that she views Estonia in a very positive light," Pevkur told ERR's online news portal. "We have not had a single bad experience with her during the past two and a half years.
According to the Estonian minister, May as prime minister of the UK will be very favorable for Estonia. "Naturally the UK has its own interests to defend, but thankfully many of the UK's interests overlap with those of Estonia as well," he added.
Pevkur is not worried that a new leader will cast any doubts on British allied presence in Estonia. "We will definitely hear about this sometime soon, but of course we know that the UK will be the one to take on a leading roll in Estonia; I do not see any reason why this should change at all," he said. "It is an agreed-upon issue and I certainly do not see any reason to worry."
The Minister of the Interior noted that the UK will be getting the best possible prime minister. "Theresa May will be a very good prime minister both for Great Britain and in relations with Estonia," he said, adding that May was not extreme to one side or another and rather sought constructiveness and preferred agreements.
The UK is slated to send a battalion of soldiers to Estonia during the first half of 2017.
Queen Elizabeth II will formally appoint Theresa May the new prime minister of the UK on Wednesday evening.
