Loone recalled from secretary general position by Center Party leadership
The Center Party Board of Directors voted 10:3 to recall Oudekki Loone from her position as party secretary general on Sunday night, designating board member Jaak Aab as acting secretary general in her stead.
The board's decision stated that, due to the misunderstandings that arose in relation to the letters of guarantee issued by previous secretary general Priit Toobal and the fact that the party's board of directors was kept uninformed about the matter, the board had lost trust in Secretary General Oudekki Loone.
"The Center Party is trying to improve its organization culture," commented Center Party Deputy Chairman Jaanus Karilaid. "We want to make [our] leadership clearer and we would like [to make sure] that incidents such as that involving the letters of guarantee never happen again. This is our duty before our voters and members. Our current party board of directors cares about the party and that is the most important thing."
The board of directors also decided to propose to the party council slated to convene on Oct. 1 to adopt a decision to call together an extraordinary congress on Nov. 5 in Paide.
The Center Party Council is expected to elect a new council chairman on Oct. 1; Kersti Sarapuu is interested in taking the position over from current council chairman Kalev Kallo.
An extraordinary congress must be called in order for an extraordinary reelection of the party's chairman to take place, however, and so it is possible that an attempt will be made to replace current chairman Edgar Savisaar at the congress in Paide on Nov. 5.
The Center Party Board of Directors convened for a meeting at 5 p.m. on Sunday; primary points of discussion at the meeting involved issues related to the letters of guarantee, however the agenda included another 11 points as well. Party Chairman Edgar Savisaar did not attend the meeting.
