Rio Games kick off, Estonian delegation gets right to work
On the day following the opening ceremonies of the Games of the XXXI Olympiad in Rio de Janeiro, nine Estonian athletes will already be heading into competition.
Saturday's competition day begins at 3:00 p.m. EEST with ETV's competition day preview. ETV will begin live broadcasting at 3:20 p.m. with the men's road race, where two Estonians, Tanel Kangert and Rein Taaramäe, will be among the competitors.The 241-kilometer (150-mile) course will begin by the Copacabana Fort. Race favorite British Chris Froome may make history, as not one cyclist has yet managed to win the Tour de France and an Olympic gold medal within the same year.
Saturday will also see the women's fencing competition kick off, beginning with the individual épée. At 4:45 p.m., Estonian Erika Kirpu will face American Katharine Holmes in the opening match; at 5:15 p.m. Estonian Irina Embrich will face Ukrainian Kseniya Pantelejeva; at 5:45 p.m. Estonian Julia Beljajeva will face Hungarian Emese Szász. The final is scheduled to take place at 11:45 p.m.
Likewise on Saturday, the Estonian Rowing Quadruple Sculls team consisting of Tõnu Endrekson, Andrei Jämsä, Kaspar Taimsoo and Allar Raja are scheduled to compete in their preliminaries at 6:30 p.m. against Germany, Ukraine, Canada and New Zealand. The best two of each preliminary heat will pass directly to the finals, while the remaining teams will continue to compete amongst themselves. The other heat will include teams from the Great Britain, Scotland, Poland, Lithuania and Australia.
