Government supports Estonia’s UN Security Council campaign
With its endorsement of the 2017-20 budgetary strategy, the government supports Estonia’s campaign for a seat on the UN’s Security Council. The proposed strategy also includes funding for the renovation of Estonia’s embassy in Moscow.
The government decided to support the new strategy on Thursday. "Both of the activities are important for Estonia's reputation as well as its security," Foreign Minister Marina Kaljurand (independent) was quoted saying by spokespeople.
Estonia will run for a temporary seat on the United Nations Security Council for 2020-2021. According to Kaljurand, this seat would provide Estonia with an opportunity to play a bigger role in solving important international security issues.
"It would allow us to discuss issues concerning Estonia, because this UN body deals with global security problems and decides the main directions for solving these," Kaljurand said.
The government will support Estonia's UN Security Council campaign with two million euros in the next two years.
The government also decided to finance the renovation of Estonia's embassy in Moscow. The building was built in 1903 and last renovated 34 years ago. The embassy desperately needed to be renovated properly and made modern and safe, Kaljurand said.
