If elected president, Kallas would not seek second term
Reform Party presidential candidate Siim Kallas stated that if he is elected president of Estonia, he would not run for a second term.
"I'm not planning on having a second term, because five years will be enough for me," stated Kallas in an interview with Estonian daily Postimees (link in Estonian).
He noted that the current focus was on the upcoming presidential election and that he did not currently have a plan B.
"And I speak from experience when I say that when this [election] is through, the political situation will have changed, and in such a situation one will have to look at what options [are available] if one wants to continue in politics," added Kallas.
The Estonian politician rejected claims that he is interested in forming a new political party as mere speculation.
Estonia's 2016 presidential elections are scheduled for Aug. 29. Should the Riigikogu fail to elect a new president by means of a supermajority of two thirds of votes within three balloting rounds, a special electoral college will be convened on Sept. 24 which consists of all 101 MPs plus representatives of Estonia's local governments.
