Rainer Vakra SDE's most likely candidate for mayor of Tallinn
Vakra told ERR on Tuesday that he was leading the efforts of the party’s Tallinn section to prepare for next year’s local elections. He also confirmed that he was ready to leave the Riigikogu and take office if he should win the election.
Rainer Vakra has been a member of the Riigikogu for the Social Democrats since 2011. Before his election to parliament, Vakra headed the administration of Tallinn’s Nõmme district from 2005 to 2011. He was a member of the Center Party until 2012 and joined the Social Democrats in 2013.
Vakra said that his party hadn’t yet agreed on an official candidate, but that as one of the front runners in the preparations for next year’s elections, his was one of the names discussed. He also confirmed that he would be ready to leave parliament for the office of mayor.
“In the case this possibility should open up, I’ll leave the Riigikogu and take on the office of mayor,” Vakra said on Tuesday.
The Social Democrats have already worked on their approach for the campaign for more than a month. According to Vakra, the political network that Center Party chairman Edgar Savisaar built in Tallinn was still very much in place. “At the moment we’re mapping out the problems, also on the city district level,” he said.
Tallinn has been governed by the Center Party for the past 11 years, with Jüri Ratas as mayor from 2005 to 2007, and Edgar Savisaar since 2007 (suspended from office since Sept. 30, 2015).
