Savisaar: Kallas’ chances “pretty good”
Center Party chairman Edgar Savisaar didn’t want to specify whether or not his party would support Kallas’ candidacy for president, but said he thought the former EU commissioner's chances were “pretty good”.
In a short interview given to ERR’s radio news on Monday, Savisaar said he was pleased that Kallas wanted to announce his candidacy.
ERR: When will the Center Party announce its own candidate?
Savisaar: We’ll get there. I'm very glad that Siim Kallas has come forward with his candidacy. I was afraid that after he didn’t make it into the ALDE leadership he had become timid, or too careful. In my opinion it’s good that the old war horse in Kallas has awoken and that he’s come forward.
There have been speculations in the media that you’ve met and discussed the matter, and that the Center Party’s votes could back up Kallas.
I wouldn’t want to speculate right now. I deal with pragmatic and realistic politics, not with speculations. It’s too early to say what’s going to happen in August. But I think that Siim Kallas has pretty good chances.
The leaders of the Reform Party have been very cautious talking about Kallas today. Do you believe that Kallas has their undivided support?
Not right now, but may well be after a time. What else have they got left? Of course they're cautious, because they’re worried that if they have a president, perhaps they won’t be able to have a prime minister anymore, but these worries all pass.
Siim Kallas said on Monday that he was planning to announce his candidacy for president next month. The lost election Savisaar mentioned in the interview was for the chairmanship of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe in November last year.
