The Romanian Ambassador to Estonia, who has until now resided in the Finnish capital of Helsinki, will soon be relocating across the Gulf of Finland to Tallinn upon the opening of the Romanian Embassy there.

Pursuant to the Foreign Relations Act, the Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs granted consent for the opening of the Romanian Embassy at 5 Rävala puiestee in central Tallinn, where a property 509 square meters in size will be placed at its disposal.

The two countries agreed in late 2014 to open their respective embassies in Bucharest and Tallinn. Then-Foreign Minister Keit Pentus-Rosimannus commented at the time that the opening of these embassies would be an important step toward strengthening bilateral cooperation between the two countries, noting that "Romania is one of the largest and most important countries in southeastern Europe and a valued partner for Estonia both in the EU and NATO."

The Estonian Embassy in Bucharest is already in operation, staffed by Ambassador of Estonia to Romania Ants Frosch as well as a locally-hired secretary. The embassy's counselor Raul Toomas resides in the Moldovan capital of Chisinau.

Romania and Estonia first established diplomatic relations on February 26, 1921, and re-established diplomatic ties on September 13, 1991, just under one month after Estonia reestablished its independence following the Soviet occupation.
