Martin Kukk leaves Riigikogu, Peep Aru to replace him
MP for the Reform Party and former party secretary general Martin Kukk announced on Wednesday that he intended to leave parliament and move on to the private sector.
Kukk is one of the Reform Party’s parliamentary group’s deputy chairmen. To ERR’s online news he expressed pride for the party’s work, pointing to its victories in the last three parliamentary elections, but said that he wanted to try something else.
He is planning to enter the private sector, and currently in negotiations about a potential involvement in a new business in the communications area.
Kukk confirmed that he was planning to remain a party member and help its Tallinn section as a volunteer whenever possible, but that he would withdraw from active politics and not participate in the political decision-making process anymore.
Outside his duties as an MP, Kukk has been running Siim Kallas’ campaign to position himself as the Reform Party’s presidential nominee. Asked whether or not he intended to continue, Kukk said that he would help along as much as he could in the future as well.
Kukk was the Reform Party’s secretary general from 2011 to 2016.
Viljandi council chairman Peep Aru to take over
Peep Aru is a seasoned politician and has been an MP before for three terms. Aru said on Wednesday that his experience would allow him to contribute to the Riigikogu's work, and that he would be interested in joining either the Constitutional or the Security Authorities Surveillance Select Committee.
Aru currently chairs the city council of Viljandi.
