President Toomas Hendrik Ilves is in Brussels from today through Sunday for the Brussels Forum, an annual meeting of high-level European and North American political, corporate, and intellectual leaders.

Participants in the annual conference, which is focused on strengthening ties between both sides of the Atlantic, will include heads of state, senior officials from various European Union institutions and member states, US Cabinet officials, Congressional representatives, parliament members, academics, and the media.

This year, particular attention will be given to changes in world security, as well as the importance of focusing on common values and mutual relations between the two spheres during challenging times filled with conflict and political change.

According to a statement released by the Office of the President of the Republic today, the conference’s program will be covering a wide variety of topics, ranging from the aftermath of the financial crisis, and climate and energy policy, to the refugee crisis affecting Europe, the future of Ukraine, developments in Russia and neighboring regions, and the conflict in Syria. Also to be discussed are the effects of new technologies on society, including on business, citizen-government relations, and law.

First Lady Ieva Ilves, who herself has first-hand experience working in the foreign and security policy fields, is also participating in the conference.
