Prime Minister Taavi Rõivas (Reform) said on Friday that he would forward Marina Kaljurand’s letter of resignation to President Ilves as soon as there was a candidate for the position of Minister of Foreign Affairs, which could take a week.

“As Marina Kaljurand once again confirmed to me that she wants to resign, I’ll forward her letter of resignation to the president as soon as I have a candidate for the position of foreign minister,” Rõivas told BNS on Friday. “According to the law I have 30 days to do that, but as I understand Marina’s wish to step down very soon, I hope to find a new foreign minister in a week,” he added.

Rõivas said that he had spoken to President Toomas Hendrik Ilves on Friday evening, adding that they agreed on the necessity to find a new foreign minister very soon.

Ilves told BNS on Friday evening that the uncertainty surrounding the post of foreign minister was disturbing, and that he wanted to discuss the situation with Rõivas at the first opportunity.

According to the president, the current lack of clarity is disturbing. Estonia needed its foreign minister every day, he said.

Kaljurand ruled out the possibility of continuing as foreign minister should she not be elected president. “I have very clearly stated that I wish to leave today. Today is my last day in office at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and I really hope that nobody is going to play legal tricks,” Kaljurand told BNS on Friday afternoon.

The prime minister had suggested earlier that Kaljurand reconsider her decision and instead take time off for the duration of the presidential campaign.
