Farmers to bring 10,000 bottles of milk to demonstration in Tallinn next week
The Central Union of Estonian Farmers (EPK) is planning a demonstration on Toompea Hill in Tallinn on Monday in which 10,000 bottles of milk will be placed in the square in front Toompea Castle.
The demonstration can be likened to an installation and will include 10,000 plastic bottles of milk arranged neatly in Castle Square in front of Toompea Castle. Following the demonstration, the milk bottles will be donated to people at the demonstration, the Food Bank as well as Food Bank partners, the EPK told the Chancellery of the Riigikogu.
The EPK is requesting the use of Castle Square in its entirety between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. for its demonstration.
According to demonstration organizers, the goal of the event is to draw attention to the long-term crisis in critical sectors of agriculture and the need for collective action on the part of the Riigikogu, the government, consumers, retal chains, the food processing industry and farmers in order to alleviate the situation.
Earlier this week, representatives of the EPK did not yet want to reveal the plans for next week's demonstration. EPK Chairman of the Board Vahur Tõnissoo told ERR over the summer that the demonstration was being planned differently and more broadly than last year.
Last September, farmers parked 101 tractors in front of Toompea Castle, the seat of the Riigikogu; hundreds of people took part in the demonstration.
EPK represents producers responsible for producing over 70 percent of Estonia's agricultural output.
