Toom: Center Party should have had larger share of government
Member of the Center Party’s leadership and Estonian MEP Yana Toom is not happy with the equal distribution of ministries under the coalition agreement. Also, the Center Party had become too accommodating during its time in opposition, Toom criticized.
“I’m not satisfied. The equal distribution of ministries to me isn’t understandable considering the size of the parliamentary groups. This is seen as a change of political culture, but I can’t agree that the will of the voters and the number of mandates are neglected like this,” Toom said commenting on the new government’s line-up to ERR.
Asked about the personalities out of her party appointed to the government, Toom said that they were strong candidates, and that she believed that they could manage with the parliamentary group’s support.
Toom said she was happy that the Center Party now was that of the prime minister, though she doesn’t think that the voters’ interests are represented as well as they could be.
“In ten years in the opposition we have become too accommodating — we started from scratch, and we’re happy that we’re getting four in exchange for the ten [years], so to say,” Toom added.
In the history of Estonia no coalition agreement had ever been a hundred percent successful, Toom said. What needed to be done now was to stand by the voters’ expectations. “And I sincerely hope that’s what will happen,” she added.
