Center Party reluctant to commit to covering Savisaar’s legal fees
The party’s secretary general, Jaak Aab, said that it wasn’t yet clear whether or not former chairman Edgar Savisaar would be helped financially to cover his legal costs. According to Aab, the party is looking into the legal costs as well as its means to help Savisaar.
It all depended on how the case continued, and how high the legal fees would eventually be, Aab said. There was a certain readiness to help, but it couldn’t be that the party committed to covering the costs no matter what.
“We have to look at the financial possibilities, and if it is possible to cover something within reason, then we can do that,” Aab said, adding that the party itself was involved in one of the aspects of the case.
Center Party chairman and Prime Minister Jüri Ratas confirmed that he had not been offered any kind of deal by the prosecutor. If something like that should come, then it would need to be discussed.
In his interview with ETV’s “Aktuaalne Kaamera” newscast on Wednesday, Aab stressed once again that the ongoing case was entirely to do with the party’s former chairman and his actions.
