Tarmo Tamm elected new chairman of Center Party parliamentary group
The parliamentary group of the Center Party elected MP Tarmo Tamm as its chairman. The position had previously been held by Kadri Simson, who will be joining the next government as Minister of Economic Affairs and Infrastructure.
“I think Kadri was a good leader, and I have to be as strong, lead the parliamentary group as she did, though the situation is a bit more complicated than it was in Kadri’s time,” Tamm told ERR’s radio news on Tuesday.
According to Tamm, his first task is to get the group to work together. “We are no longer in opposition, we have to be present all the time now, we have to follow the bills, we need to actively contribute. And that’s a completely different role from being in opposition,” Tamm said.
Tamm will face a different parliamentary group than Simson’s, as the five members that will be part of the new government (Jüri Ratas, Kadri Simson, Mailis Reps, Mihhail Korb, and Martin Repinski) will be replaced with other people off the Center Party’s election lists.
The government needed to be able to rely on them, and their support in putting its politics into practice, Tamm added.
Seven members of Center’s 27-strong parliamentary group voted against Tamm.
