Rõivas denounces attempted coup in Turkey
Commenting on the dramatic events that took place in Turkey last night, Prime Minister Taavi Rõivas (Reform) said that he unequivocally condemned the attempted military coup.
“Constitutional order and the work of government institutions must be restored as soon as possible,” Roivas was quoted to the media by the government’s press office. “Military force and violence can never be an instrument of political struggle.”
According to Rõivas, European Union leaders currently in Mongolia for the Asia-Europe summit followed the developments in Turkey throughout the night. “We also jointly expressed the wish that constitutional order in Turkey be restored as swiftly as possible,” he said.
Rõivas added that it was an indication of the strength of Turkish society that all opposition parties in Turkey's parliament denounced the attempted coup. It was clear that the Turkish society preferred democratic processes to military violence, he said.
